Sump pumps are most often an integral part of the waterproofing experience. The only occasional exception to this is the All-Dry Basement System baseboard method under certain circumstances.
Many times your old sump pump will not be sufficient do to age, poor installation, and other factors regarding reliability. When a sump pump is properly installed it can be expected to usually last a very long time unless your live very near a lake, pond, or have a very high water table which will cause a sump pump to work more than usual. In such very high usage cases you may be well advised to replace the sump pump every four years or so.
That said, a sump pump will usually outlive it’s owner and then some. They all come with warranties, however, usage is still the determining factor of life expectancy.
